I’ve been a theater artist for decades, a filmmaker for just a few years.
The creative freedom that drew me to high-risk, low-budget, independent theater has recently become a possibility in the filmmaking world,
thanks to unprecedented public access to the means of production and distribution... (cheap cameras, computer editing, internet distribution)
While still in Costa Rica I began learning what I could, taking editing courses, reading books , catching up on film history, making videos. Most important to that self-teaching was a podcast called Directors Notes, which I highly recommend for both knowledge and inspiration. My newfound fascination culminated with the intensive Masters degree I took in directing film at the University of Barcelona (ESCAC) last year.
It was a steeper learning curve than I’d been on in years, but if a challenge was what I was seeking, mission accomplished--and in Spanish to boot. The links below include my three student films, all of which are experiments in some way or other with extending my ideas from the stage to the screen.
I hope you’ll have a look at these and some of the other films I have posted on Vimeo, including some recent experiments, and a documentary I worked on my last year in Barcelona. Enjoy, and if you have a moment, please leave feedback at the vimeo site, or just hit the ‘like’ button there.
And if you’re looking for a collaborator for film projects, so am I. I haven’t gotten over the other side of the learning curve, but at least I’ve gotten used to living on the slope! Nor did film school cause the bug to un-bite me: film is sure to be an ongoing part of my life, both as an educator and an artist.
