2008-2009 Gifted Education Coordinator

American School of Barcelona (Barcelona, Spain)
•Developed a new ‘gifted education’ department at the middle and high school level, including analysis of school needs and resources, proposal of multiple models and recommendation for best fitting model.
•Implemented that program, naming it ‘Autonomous Learning and Acceleration’ (ALA).
•Developed and implemented school-wide identification process, combining teacher referrals, academic records, personal history and test scores.
•Worked with identified students, grades 6-10 to develop plans of study based on each individual’s interests, skills, talents, readiness, challenge level.
•Also created group settings to address the social-emotional needs of gifted students.
•Created short- and long-term courses of study, ranging from self-paced online courses, to individual and small-group independent study, to hands-on projects in the fields of math, science, history and English, as well as creative projects in the arts.
•Collaborated with teachers to ensure differentiation to ALA students’ level, whenever possible, within the classroom.
•Worked closely with teachers and administrators to schedule students’ ALA work to occur when students could most afford to miss portions of their ‘regular’ classes.
•Systematically communicated their activities and progress to parents in regular written reports.

•Collaborated with colleagues to integrate drama and film studies into long-term humanities projects, including narrative short films about American slavery in 9th grade history; competitive poetry readings in 10th grade English; and a performance-based enrichment ‘residency’ in Greek Tragedy during the 10th grade study of Oedipus Rex.

•Helped found and design a teacher training program for Educational Theatre Company, a non-profit professional theater outreach program specializing in performing arts residencies for students & teachers throughout Washington, DC Metro Area, Maryland and Virginia.
•Designed and implemented training for first year teaching artists, coordination of peer evaluation and support system.
•Personally mentor trainee and veteran teaching artists, as well as developing system for training other mentors.
•Coordinate workshop events, including workshops by outside experts and in-house experts, and ‘peer lesson swap’ workshops. Coordinate and invite school teachers to attend workshops as well as ETC teaching artists.
•Developed web forum for the posting of lesson plans; developed template for lesson plans; train ETC teachers in lesson plan and curriculum development.
